The Institute offers a specialized program for qualified students of architecture. The Architecture studio is located in the Palazzo Alamanni, once a noble Florentine family residence. The palazzo was built in the late sixteenth century in the traditional Renaissance style and expanded in the nineteenth century to include a large garden courtyard and second edifice. Palazzo Alamanni is found in one of the characteristic parts of Florence known as the Oltrarno (the other side of the Arno river), an area renowned for its traditional artisan workshops and antique stores. The architecture studio is conveniently located within walking distance of Palazzo Rucellai.

The Architecture program accepts students who have completed two years of architecture study. Participants are required to enroll in the following curriculum: 

• Advanced Design Studio (5 credits)
• Architecture in Context: Florence (3 credits)
• Italian Language (4 credits)
• Elective (3 credits) 

All students are provided with individual drafting tables and workspace for the duration of the program. The studio and context courses are taught by practicing architects and academics, and are designed to integrate classroom study with visits to churches, museums and monuments, and field trips to a variety of relevant destinations. The courses allow students to sketch on site and explore ideas for a team project that is the core of the advanced design studio course.


The Facilities

The architecture studio has been renovated in a refined contemporary style resulting in a harmonious mix of Modern and Renaissance. The studio is spacious and bright and contains architecture tables equipped with sliding rulers and lamps, as well as common work areas and ample pin-up space. The studio also includes a computer lab, library, conference room and an administrative office. A network with dedicated Internet access connects a series of computers equipped with the latest design software including AutoCAD® and other applicable programs, as well as large format color printers.
